How the desktop helper works

From your phone to your record in four steps

Install and sign in

On a Mac, open the downloaded file and drag Custody Hero into your Applications folder. On Windows, run the installer. Then sign in with the same account you use on your iPhone.

Connect your iPhone

On a Mac, plug your iPhone in with a cable and let the helper back it up with one click, or point it at a backup you already made in Finder. On Windows, back the phone up first with the Apple Devices app or iTunes, then point the helper at that backup.

Pick conversations

Choose the conversations you want to keep and the family they belong to. You stay in control of exactly what gets imported.

Upload to your record

The helper uploads the messages to your account, where they become a fixed, searchable record you can build binders from.

Text and voice notes only

Messages come over as text, and voice messages are transcribed so they're searchable.

Photos and videos stay put

They can be large, so they're skipped entirely. A message that had one shows a small placeholder, so your record stays intact.

Your backup password is never sent

If your iPhone backup is encrypted, the password stays in memory on your own computer and is never uploaded.

Questions about the downloads

Do I need both apps?
You need the iPhone app to run your case, build binders, and use the AI assistant. The Mac helper is optional: use it only if you want to bring your iMessage and SMS history in as evidence.
Does the helper upload my photos or videos?
No. Only the text of messages and transcripts of voice notes are uploaded. Photos and videos are skipped and never leave your computer.
Will the helper work on an Intel Mac?
Yes. The Mac download is a universal build that runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M1 and later) and Intel Macs. There is one download for both, so you don't need to know which Mac you have.
What's different about the Windows version?
One step. On Windows the helper doesn't make the iPhone backup for you, so back your phone up first with Apple's free Apple Devices app (or iTunes), choosing "Back Up Now" and letting it finish. Everything after that is identical: the helper finds the backup, you pick your conversations, and they import. Encrypted backups are fully supported, and the backup password stays on your PC.
My iPhone is on the latest iOS and the one-click backup stalls. What do I do?
On the newest iOS versions, the most reliable path is to make a backup in Finder first (connect your iPhone, open Finder, choose "Back up all the data on your iPhone to this Mac"), then use the helper's "Import from an existing backup" option.
Is the download safe to open?
The Mac app is signed with our Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS Gatekeeper verifies it and it opens without warnings. The Windows installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show a "Windows protected your PC" notice on first run: click More info, then Run anyway. We're working on a Windows certificate.
